Last night my brother and I went to CC to take a look around for stuff but ended up buying a 30D kit for $1499 plus $300 MIR. Is this camera really that good?

You guys just had 1.5K to blow on a camera... without even knowing for sure if it was "really that good?" I hope you're going to be spending around that much or more for lenses to make the most out of it.

It's definitely a good camera... but for the price he paid.... ehhh...

No.

Wait until February for the EOS-40D...10mpx with anti-dust technology, etc. Otherwise, the EOS-400D/Rebel XTi has better internals. Spend the difference on better glass.

$1300 (after tax) isn't butraped for a brand new 30D kit. It's expensive, but maybe it's worth it to him to be able to walk up to the store as opposed to buying it online.

and a camera is only as good as it's photographer ;) All depends on if you make use of it or not.

You should've consulted the fuzzycanonwhorebunny before making the purchase. I'm sure the bunny would've pointed you to the right direction w/ the bestest lens and canon DSLR possible. Oh well, at least it's not my money.

I just got a 20d with grip used for $700 shipped. The 30D has a larger LCD, but that's about the only difference. Not worth an $800 price difference, IMO.

It's definitely a good camera...

He did the research beforehand, and he chose that camera. I just didnt know, any lense recommendations?

meh, I'd take the better form of the 30D, and the fact the XTi really can't focus like it's big brother. Granted, that is more from hearsay than use. I still like the ergo of the 30D over the new rebels.

where'd you hear about the 40D specs? I hope you're right, I'd like to pick up a used 30D for my birthday next year.. heh

Is there a brand you prefer? I had a 300D and upgraded to the 20D. Does that make me a canon whore?

Ah, ok. Your post made it seem like you guys walked into CC, looked around, and just randomly decided to put down 1.5K on a camera...

As for lens, it really depends on what things he's going to shoot. Landscape, portraiture, wildlife, macro, general walk-around-town?

The price really isn't that great. If the camera was bought used it would have been a lot cheaper. Someone recently PMed me saying he got the camera for under $1000 new from B&H after Canon's rebate.

You don't think Canon is really going to allow the XTi with its cheaper price, more megapixels, and anti-dust technology to out-shine its more expensive brother do you?

I expect the 40D to get the sensor and anti-dust tech of the XTi but it in a better body with more AF points and a Digic III processor.

I've had the 300D digital rebel, the 20D, and now the 5D. A great budget lens for the new user is the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 for about $325. I had that on my 300D, and I loved it.

We could always return it, how much is it online?

I've seen as low as $1200, but I haven't been looking. I think you need a better camera to take pictures of yourself in suits with mismatched shirts and ties... That one's just too blurry.

your price difference is invalid. a used 30D can go for ~$1000. So $300 for a larger LCD, and large buffer and other small things. Altho, those things only apply if they are useful to you... but still, your price comparison is a bit off.

You can get the Canon 28-135 IS for about the same price. I've owned it and its a great lens.

Taken from a PM JulesMaximus gave to me:

Hey, I just bought a Canon 30D this past week. Taking advantage of Canon's double rebates so I'll get $200 off the B&H Photo price of $1,139.95 so this camera will end up costing me $939.95!!!

It's a really sweet camera. I love it! So much more intuitive than my 300D and the images are freakin gorgeous! I'll have to find some decent subjects to shoot this weekend. So far all I've taken pictures of are my cat and my son (both indoors at night). I'm still learning how to use it but so far I love it.

Here's my setup:

Canon EOS-30D
17-40mm f/4.0 L
70-200mm f/4.0 L
50mm f/1.4
Speedlight 580EX
Canon Battery Grip for 30D[/q[

Not too much you can do with that.

Maybe the Tamron 17-50 F2.8 as a starter lens? Costs $450.

Link

Or this combo perhaps...

Sigma 18-50 F2.8 ($420)
Canon 50 F1.8 MkII ($80)

Well, I was wondering more if you had an official mention of it :) I like solid time tables.. heh.

Split your entire budget evenly between the body and lenses. Body + fast prime + short zoom + long zoom.
