Is the British Monarchy still valid in the 21st century?

I was listening to the BBC during lunchtime and I was surprised to hear that the Queen of England is empowered to be the head of the Church of England. Made me wonder if having a 'King' or 'Queen' is still valid today.

Yeah, pretty much. The Queen still has a lot of power she just chooses not to use it.

It worries me slightly that Prince Charles has hinted he may not be so quiet on the political front when (if?) he becomes King.

The queen/king are still informed about secret operations, intelligence, etc.

The elected politicians are scared to death of the royalty. Many brits still respect the crown, and will tend to follow it. That they have an agreement to stay out of politics is good, but it could be easily broken if desired.

So, while the royalty is just for show now, it *could* become a force to be reckoned with if pushed.

I would go on a total power trip if I was King...I'd take Britain back to the Dark Ages. If you think about the country was MUCH better off when it was a monarchy.

Pretty boy William is extremely popular with the British public, especially among screaming 14 year old girls. As long as he is around (and not ugly), the monarchy has nothing to worry about.

Hrrmm... Well, supposedly the British monarchy pays for itself and then some because of the tourism revenues it generates. There wouldn't be half as many tourists visiting the UK if it weren't for the monarchy.

They can veto ANY law passed in the government if they so wish, but they never do.

Yes and no. While they technically could interfere in political affairs, the people of England have become so accustomed to Democratic society that they would quickly get rid of the monarchy if Buckingham Palace made such a move.

Nah, it likely generates cash for the UK: tourism, fascination, parades, etc....

Absolutely. The Monarchy is a great tourist trap/commercial enterprise, if nothing else.
I vote "yes" b/c regardless of their "real" political power, anything that pulls that much revenue is valid in at least one way.

If it wasn't valid in the 20th, why would it be in the 21st?

They would step right into line once you started taking off their heads and sticking them on pikes on the Tower.
