I don't download music so before I go off and buy a CD is this band any good? I hear it's kind of like classic Maiden and if that's true I should like it. Thoughts?

Iced Earth kicks ass.

There are only a handful of people on these boards that know who they are. However, I learned of them through ATOT.

I recommend getting their live CD set, Alive in Athens.

Simply KICKASS.

All of their albums have good songs though. I also like their latest album, Horror Show.

Burnt Offerings has one of their masterpieces on it, a 16 minute piece called Dante's Inferno.

Hell yeah

btw, the Live in Athens album has the best sound engineering ever! Many people in the car audio realm love
to use that CD to exagerate how good their system sounds :)

<edit>Dang! Couldn't beat Eli to it!</edit>

Power metal. :)

Tight, crunchy palm muted lightning fast riffs.. kinda centering on the Iron Maiden-esque triplet "gallop".

Also, their album "Something Wicked This Way Comes" is awesome.

THey recently left the label they were with for a long time, Century Media, and without the help and advice of the CM folks, the newest album is rather weak...look for the records that came out mid-90s on Century Media.

You mean the new album with Tim "The Ripper" Owens on vocals? I have only heard clips. Is it out yet? I kinda forgot about it. If you mean Horror Show, I completely disagree. The style is a bit different, but it shreds with the best of them.

That is strange though, Jon thinks the latest album is his best work yet.

I was very disappointed when I heard Matt was leaving the band. His vocals are simply awesome.

I'm afraid I might think of Judas Priest with every one of the new songs. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just gets rid of some of the uniqueness.

Maybe it won't be an issue if the songs are good enough though.

Yes, they are very good. Think early Metallica, with some very Iron Maiden influences. Also, if you do decide you like IE, you might want to check out a band called Blind Guardian; they are close friends and sound fairly alike.

I guess I'll be the first to say I don't like them at all. Well, let me be more accurate. The music itself is great. Truly freaking great. The vocals are fvcking horrible and the lyrics themselves strike me as pretty stupid. If they'd get a new lead singer who could write some decent stuff and had a decent voice I'd be all over them.

What songs have you been listening to?? :Q

They have had quite a few different singers. The vocals on their earlier albums are quite strange.. I always said the dude sounded like a troll... lol

But the albums that Matt sings on- you've got to be kidding me?! He has such incredible range.... I don't see how anybody that likes metal singing could say he is bad. He is one of the best metal singers I've ever heard- like I said, his range is absolutely amazing. He can sing with the best of them, but he can also scream like a demon and growl deep down low...

Honestly, if you don't like Matt's singing, then who's singing do you like? :Q

If you haven't listened to any of their newish material, then you need to do so.. because the singer(s) on their first few albums did suck.
