Is the AVI capture the same between cards?

I'm looking for an inexpensive capture card. To get the best quality capture though, I'm thinking about capturing the video as AVI, then compressing it using another method. As the title suggests, my question is is the AVI quality roughly comparable between cards? I'm only doing 5 minutes clips at most, so I'm not concerned about disk space or processing time.

I'm thinking about either the Hauppauge WinTV Radio or the Leadtek WinFast TV2000XP Deluxe because from what I've read they don't recognize Macrovision.
