Just curious. Anyone have any thoughts on it. Looking to game on it such as UT2K4 and Halo.

Do you think it will be as good as a 21" CRT or maybe even better? After all it is made for graphics.

the new one or old one?

old one = no

new one = kinda

no LCD could beat a top of the line CRT in gaming

also, why apple? you can get a dell 20" widescreen and next month, there will be a 24" widescreen

both are cheaper than apple counterparts

The new one. Only the new one has the option to convert to DVI. The older ones don't.
Well I just thought maybe it was better then the regular LCD's such as Dells, Samsung, etc...

If it is not then I guess I will just keep my CRT. But I was just looking to get some input on it before I buy it if it can handle or not handle gaming as good as a CRT.

It has EXCELLENT response time, passes the satellite test with flying colours. (pun not intended!)

Some greys look a little pink for some reason but you get used to it or adjust it out. Brightness! Oh yeah the damn thing will blind you unless you're using it outdoors.

I wish it had a power connector on the monitor along with a DVI connector instead of the silly white box with the USB and FW connectors. I guess they want to preserve the "no desktop clutter" image of the Mac. At least it looks good on the desktop.

The new one *is* DVI. The previous ones were ADC (Apple Display Connector) which was a proprietary* connector which carried DVI, power, and usb on one cable.

* ADC and the ADC connector was based on a preliminary VESA draft spec. It never became an official open standard however, partially because it would have required compliant graphics cards to supply power to monitors through this funky connector. ATI and NVIDIA graphics cards for Macs that use the ADC connector have an extra set of card edge connectors to get this additional power. Some of the graphics cards for the G5 towers still have one ADC connector and one DVI connector, but Apple is phasing it out. New Apple monitors no longer use ADC (they use normal DVI now) and the GeForce 6800 GT and Ultra DDL cards for the G5 are already sporting just two normal dual link DVI ports.

The current Apple monitors don't have a breakout box for USB and Firewire. But there is a power brick. The cable coming off of the monitor branches out into DVI, USB, Firewire, and Power. The power cable plugs into the power brick.

This is the end of the cable:

From what I've seen with UT2004 on a G5 + Apple 23", they look pretty nice for games. I was not able to compare it side-by-side with a CRT, but it did look pretty darn nice. And this was under harsh convention hall lighting. I would imagine the display would look even better under normal soft lighting in your home.

The new brushed aluminum Apple monitors look really nice next to the G5 tower. Now Apple needs to make a matching aluminum keyboard! :) Maybe something like the silver backlit keyboard from the 15" PowerBook.

I've wanted this ever since I had last year's Powerbook. The backlit keyboard is a great idea....I wonder why no one makes keyboards like that.

It's not nearly as classy as the silver, laser engraved keyboard on the 15" and 17" PowerBooks, but it is backlit and it's not very expensive. I'd even consider buying one for one of my PCs if it feels good to type on.

Compare to PowerBook:

I have the new one and there is a single (thick cable coming from the monitor that goes to a stub where a cable terminates for DVI, USB, 1394 and power which goes to a white "brick".

At least that's what I remember from the last time I saw it. :)

I just wish the monitor itself had the connectors like the Samsung 243T. Of course the response time and colour quality blow the 243T out of the water...

i bought this sucker last week, and after a weekend full of gaming, there is some *slight* ghosting. i have been gaming for many years on a Professional Graphing CRTs and when hauling ass around a FPS, there will be a *slight* blur, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. . . if you are into anime.

my verdict: i'm *may* return it, but, i feel i've already gotten used to all of the extra space on screen, which is great with my games (even if there is a slight blur)

ps: i could only notice the blur when there was text on screen and i was moving by it. other textures aren't noticeable

my recommendation is to buy it at a store and try it out. if you don't like it, return it (but i doubt you will)

good luck

THanks for all the insight and info's people. I will wait till the technology is out that LCD are able to be as good as CRT first before I buy then.
