Is the Abit KA7-100 compadible with the Thunderbird Slot A?

Ive found a place that has Thunderbird 700 SlotA and was wondering if the KA7-100 works with these cpus. Ive heard some KX133 boards work with the SlotA Thunderbird. So if you know any please tell. Thanks.

It will work on the Ka7-100, but there have been some compatibility issues with the T-Bird and the KX133 chipset. It would probably work, but you probably would have better results o/c with a "classic" Athlon.

Hmm well thanks for the info. I guess it comes down to wether i wana risk buying a Thunderbird 700 SlotA and it not working with the mb or just get a Athlon "classic" 700 for cheaper and oc it.

If you can afford it, I would step up to the 850. It overclocks better than the 700, and has the same 2.9ns NEC cache as the 700. With a GFD and the KA7-100, I wouldn't be surprised if you hit 1.1ghz...

Also, I have heard that Abit is working on a adapter to use Socket "A" T-birds and Durons with Slot "A" mobo's. The next generation of the T-bird and the Duron will have the new "Mustang" core early next year, so when that adapter comes out, you should be able to use your KA7-100 with them. By then, any early compatibility issues should be resolved... Have Fun!

Thanks for the info. I would go upto the 850, but im trying to keep this CPU and MB upgrade around 400-450. I think il get the "classic" Athlon 700 and see how high i can oc that. Oh yhea any idea how high i can hit with a Athlon 700? I dont plan on getting a GFD so just gona use the KA7-100 for the oc'ing. And if Abit is working on a SlotA to SocketA adapter thats great. Means i wouldnt have to worry about upgrades as much.

Take a look over at AMDZONE, they have two threads about T/BIRDS and KX133 and T/Birds on Irongate. Not sure what the latest info is, but the 850 may be a problem. Seems people are having better luck with the lower speed Birds and overclocking.

Marksels, I got my 850 for $300 and my KA7-100 for $150, that falls in your budget. Check Accessmicro.com for Athlon prices...

OEM...In Athlons there really is no difference between the OEM and Retail unlike the P3's. The two main differences are warranty and if a heatsink/fan is included. If you are going to use a GFD, you don't need the warranty, and if you plan to o/c, the retail heatsink would not be your best choice. If you got the 850 and the KA7-100, I suggest you get the Global Win VOS32. IMO it is the best Athlon cooler out there, and you will have no problems using it on the KA7-100 (won't fit on Asus boards unless modified). The Card Cooler has it for under $30. I bought my Athlon OEM 850 from Accessmicro.com, and it was like $307 + s/h. I also bought the KA7-100 there. That was before the T-Bird release...they should be less now.

Insane3d: Mustang core is due out in a couple of months so we will likely see mustan athlons by years end. Mustang durons will be available most likely like you said, early next year. damn cant wait!
