8800 =~ 9800 =~ GTS 250, which I have, and which trades blows with the GTS 450 in everything but CUDA, where it gets its ass handed to it.

The GTS 450 is considered midrange.

With 640 MBs of VRAM, I'd drop it in and not worry about it. But then again, I'm only gaming at 1280x1024.
a gts450 is about 50%-60% faster than the 8800gts 640mb.

It's not a great card but it's not as useless as people here are making it seem either.

My current rig is a core 2 duo, and 8800GT (upgrades in the mail). Here's what I'm able to run from the last couple years @ 1680x1050:

Crysis - Meduim Settings
Mirror's Edge - High Settings
Colin McRae: Dirt 2 - High Settings
Need for Speed: Shift - High Settings
Batman: Arkham Asylum - High Settings
Borderlands - Medium Settings
Torchlight - High Settings
Left 4 Dead 2 - High Settings
Mass Effect 2 - High Settings
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Low Settings (more CPU limited)
Supreme Commander 2 - High Settings
Metro 2033 - Low Settings
Just Cause 2 - Medium/High settings
Blur - High Settings
Singularity - High Settings
Mafia II - Medium Settings
Medal of Honor - High Settings
COD Black Ops - Medium Settings
COD Modern Warfare 2 - High Settings
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit - Medium Settings

well the 8800gt is a bit stronger in newer games than a 8800gts 640mb would be. in fact its closer to the 8800gtx in performance.

Still you get the idea. And old card can still play a lot of new games relatively well, because game engines really haven't changed that much over the past few years.

If its an 8800 GTS "512" OC its going to be OK on medium/high settings at lower resolutions for many games. Still an useful card. If its a 320/640 its going to be pretty low.
