Is the 7970 still top of the Radeon pile?

Gradually acquiring parts for a new system, have an i7, psu, case, getting a mobo soon (Asus z87-pro). need to figure out what video card to use, want high end, but not obscenely high. Is the 7970 still fitting that bill?

What do you mean, exactly? The R9 290 and 290X both beat it. The R9 280X also beats it, but that's because the 280X is literally a 7970 running at higher clocks.

If you can find it cheap its still worth getting but if you can't then its better to get the newer replacement.

I would still go with a 7970 if you can get a good deal on it ($300 or less) because you won't have to deal with the heat issues of the 290s and you would be paying nearly double for a 290x. The performance difference is certainly not going to be double though.

But it all comes down to your budget, intentions, and system/cooling setup.

Radeon 7950 is usually the price to performance king, but can you still buy it?

The good deals on sub-$300 AMD are pretty much 7970, 7950 and 280X. In fact, good deals on 7950s put those cards squarely sub-$200.

If you want high-end, but aren't one to splurge on the very highest end, consider the 290 (but you'll have to read around concerning noise/power/throttling, etc. if you're going to buy a reference model), or you can keep an eye open for custom cards which should be arriving quite shortly, now.

The R9 290X is the Radeon flagship right now, with the 290 very close behind it.

Prices on the other Radeons spiked though due to Litecoin.

That's what I meant. It might be a full Tahiti chip, rather than a 7950 rebrand.

They're actually a little more than just a Tahiti rebrand, which is why they are now known as a Curocao.

Apparently AMD updated the display controller so that if you run a third monitor it does't have to be from the DisplayPort (which almost no one has) and instead can be DVI + HDMI + DVI as well.
