Is the 7800GS the best card for AGP?

Sure, eVGA . . . maybe there will be a 7900gs you can step-up to within 90 days.

the x850xt is about the main 'other choice' but it is curently more expensive and has less features

The 7800GS is the best AGP card based on price\performance\features.

However I am still disapointed that it's not a direct 7800GT port.

Instead of it being the best choice ever, it's the best choice barely.

It's pretty much the best. The X850 bets it in a few benchmarks but overall the 7800 rules.

It would reckon that the reason for not having a direct port of the 7800gt is to keep a performance step between AGP and PCI express at the same price point.

Currently the 7800GS CO Superclock is the best. (except in FEAR where the x850XT/PE still outperforms by a small margin) I have read two reviews now on this card where the reviewer/s said eVGA was working on a KO version using their ECS3 cooling kit so we may (read: may) see one more 7800GS version from eVGA. If the KO version does materialize then figure a AGP card with another 10-15% or so performance increase over the current 7800GS CO Superclock. Probably $30-$50 more in cost. I havent seen anything official from eVGA yet though.

It seems that Evga 7800 gs superclock owners may be having more problems with this card than others. I got a hint of that in Evgas community board.

After reading a few complaints about stability of the EVGA Superclock at delivered speed, I decided to go with the high-clocked XFX card for my nephew. It's perfectly stable with excellent IQ, but the fan is annoyingly loud when running at max speed. It emits the kind of whine that sounds like something lightly rubbing the fan blades. Not for people who like quiet.

Most likely, there IS something rubbing on the fan blades. The XFX cards have an issue of a protective plastic film that wasn't removed during assembly, and hits the fan. Sux...Contact XFX, and they usually give you the option of carefully removing the fan cover, and removing the plastic film yourself, (and not voiding your warranty) or RMA it to them, and they'll do it for you.
I've been living with it for a couple of days, and have even considered RMA'ing it to NewEgg over it. This is a manufacturing defect, and it seems most if not all of them have this problem.

Boomer - Thank you for the info... that is surely the problem, as this is a bit too loud to be just air noise. I'll get in touch with them. I wish I had asked about this earlier, because I just hauled it to my sister's and got it running. At least it sounds like an easy fix.

I have the Evga 7800gs 430 core 1300 mem

I wanted to get the one with 4600 core and 1350 mem but I'm not sure it is safe to push the core that much so I saved the $30 premium.

I only got the Evga because it advertised that it supports Dual link DVI. I could not find anything on the BFG or XFX cards, If I was 100% sure that the other brands had dual link dvi I would have bought the other instead. I just think BFG has better quality products and XFX has a better warrenty policy.

Since they had given me the OK to remove the piece of plastic film myself, I went ahead and did it this afternoon. Ah, the sweet sound of silence...(well, with 6 case fans, and one for the power supply, it's never really silent, but...) the annoying whine of the fan hitting the plastic is gone...

Shouldnt worry about the evga superclock one. I got one and the first one kept crashing but rmaed it and boom it works fine. They are accepting rma's if the card is a dud.

Yeah, I'm not having the problems some are reporting over at eVGA's forums. I guess I got lucky and got a good card. I still need to do some more strenuous testing with this card though to evaluate its full potential in gaming. I dont have any sound testing equipment other than my own ears but the new 7800GS sounds quieter than my old 9800Pro 256 card that it replaced.

I had to wait to start work for a few hours this morning, so I fixed the cooler on my XFX card. It was, as described above, a sheet of protective plastic which had lifted a little around the fan opening. It's very quiet now.

just picked up a BFG7800GS OC. running perfect @ 480/1.4Ghz.

not much faster than my BFG6800GT OC tho... but it definately runs ALOT cooler than my 6800 -- by about 20c.

I have a shuttle box and an X800 Pro... will there be an AGP version of the 7900? How much better are the 7800/7900's over my current card?

n/m, I'm not even going to bother... just did some light reading... looks like I'll just stick with X800 / Shuttle combo for a while until the next gen of HDR cards come out.

Im going to try to up my 7800gs oc superclocked to a 7900 gt co seeing its 220 i think. Man it sucks if i cant because i bought mine for 322.68 and i have to step up to something higher.
