Is the 7600 GT faster than a 7800 GT?

I was shopping for video cards on newegg todat and noticed that the core and memory clock on a 7600 GT are higher than my 7800 GT. The one I was looking at was the XFX model and it had 580/1500 vs my 7800 GT which is 470/1100????? If the clock speeds are faster on the 7600 why is it called 7600 which is a lower number? I thought when newer and faster cards came out the model number went up..like 7800 to 7900? What am I missing?

heres some homework for ya: find out how many pipelines/ shaders each card has. clock speeds and RAM amounts arent everything....

ur 7800gt is much faster for several reasons.

1. it has a 256 bit memory interface providing for twice the memory bandwith of the 7600gt
2. it has 20 pixel pipelines instead of the measly 12 that the 7600gt comes with. a full 8 extra pixel pipelines provides for MUCH more pixel processing power. alliteration aside, thats a fairly big deal ;)

The reason the 7600gt has higher clock speeds is becuase in order for a 128bit 12 pipe card to compete the clocks on GPU and mem and have to insane to compensate for its shortcomings. Hope this answers ur questions.

*EDIT* And no ur 7800gt is NOT = 7800gtx. the gtx has 200mhz higher mem clocks and 30 mhz higher core clocks along with 4 extra pixel pipelines. However when i OC'ed my old 7800gt to 530/1250 it could easily keep up with 7800gtx's. :)

I just want to sincerely thank you for explaining that to me. It really helps that you took the time to help me understand, unlike some of the others who scolded me for not doing the research myself. So, Thank you!!

Actually the 7600GT has 128 bit while 7800GT has 256 bit memory interface.
