Is the 4-pin square 12v atx connector necessary for AMD motherboard ?

My old power supply doesn't seems to have the square atx power connector

I heard that the 4-pin atx power connctor is only use in a Intel board.

Do I need to buy one of these

or can I just ignore the 4-pin power atx connector for AMD board ?

Yes, it's necessary. Most mobos that have one will not power up without it, and worse, you can damage your mobo if it's not connected. You should be able to use an adapter like the one in your like, assuming your power supply has enough power for it.

Actually, there also are Pentium-4 boards that don't have it, just as well as there are Athlon boards that do. The generic rule is, if the board has the extra connector, then you are supposed to plug it in.
