Is the 4-pin square 12v atx connector necessary for AMD motherboard ?

Yes, it's necessary. Most mobos that have one will not power up without it, and worse, you can damage your mobo if it's not connected. You should be able to use an adapter like the one in your like, assuming your power supply has enough power for it.

Actually, there also are Pentium-4 boards that don't have it, just as well as there are Athlon boards that do. The generic rule is, if the board has the extra connector, then you are supposed to plug it in.
