Is the .22 caliber even close to being adaquate for self defense use?

ALWAYS aim to kill when using a firearm in self defence. Dead men tell no lies in court. Two in the chest, and one in the head is the way it should always be.

If someone threatens me to the point I am in fear for my life, I am going to do everything in my power to kill them immediately, not pussy around with shooting them to "deter" them from the attack. My life in infinately more valuable then theirs.

And yes, a 22LR is very underpowered for self defence. I use a 10mm for concealed carry myself.

Why the 10mm? why not just go with a .40? .40 is generally more commonly available. and arent the ballistics similar?

The ballistics are only similar if you use the "FBI lite" loads for the 10mm. The 10mm can be loaded MUCH hotter than the .40, and is pretty much like carrying a little .357 magnum around ifyou got the right ammo. The 10mm was developed for the FBI but it lost favor due to some agents could not take the recoil and muzzle blast of the thing (pansies). The "FBI lite" are toned down loads that bring the ballistics down to the level of a .40 S&W, which was being devoloped for law enforcement around the same time. All 10mm firearms should take the full brunt of the hotter and proper loads for the round, it is just that most ammo you get in the store is toned down a bit.


I also carry my USP Compact .45 every now and then too, depends on the clothes I am wearing.

If size didn't matter and you didn't need to conceal I'd say a 40 or 10mm... but if the guns so large that you end up leaving it behind often, it's not worth much.

There's a difference between a shot eventually killing someone (as in how a 22 might), and a shot that is going to keep them from shooting back or continuing to attack you. They have special self defense rounds in 9mm that are engineered to cause maximum shock/bleeding... go with those.

I carry a Kel-Tec .380 during the warmer months (as it's much easier to conceal) and a S&W .40 during the cooler months. I keep both loaded with Spear Gold Dot hollow points. I would not trust my life to a .22.

.380 at the minimum. Kel-Tec makes a nice VERY SMALL .380 thats perfect for concealed carry when you dress light. In fall when you can carry a bit bigger I'd definitely step up to a 9mm, in winter go all out with the .45. But I certainly wouldnt feel outgunned with a 9mm.

Personally I keep all my handguns in .40, just for convenience. I have nothing against .45 though. I wouldn't choose anything less for self defense, but then I'm anal.

A .380 is boarder line, a .357Mag is killer, 9mm just a tad better than .380 but 10mm or

Depends on what you load it with. Are you talking slugs or scattershot? If you live alone either is fine. But if you have other family members in the house and use scattershot you run the risk of accidentally spraying a family member. You never know what the circumstances could be in a home invasion. More innocent bystanders around demands greater accuracy. Then of course even if you do live alone, if you use a slug there's the risk it could go through the wall and kill a neighbor if you miss your intended target. I'd think that a hollowpoint loaded handgun with a long barrel of some sort would be ideal for home protection as it would fragment on impact with the wall yet still provides accuracy which may be more necessary in some situations.

99% of the time... if you shoot somebody with a bullet, any bullet, they're probably not going to be continuing the attack. All you people insisting on .45s and such as the minimum needed... why not just use a fawkin BFG that way you're sure to incinerate all attackers within a 100 yard vicinity?

Is a .22 sufficient to defend yourself? Sure, the same way a knife is, a bow and arrow is, a hand grenade, a m82a1 .50 cal sniper rifle is, etc. Properly used, I can defend myself with my blackberry.

Now if you're expecting to be attacked by a gang of 50-strong ninja pirates, you may want something different.
