I was going to use an extra machine as a router, but for $19, i am doubting it. I really wanted the smc if any because of the print server, but i may have to make do. tell me what you think!
Have used the Linksys, SMC and Netgear. Netgear is a little more difficult to configure, especially the advanced filters set, etc., but it seems to be the most stable/speedy of the three. The Linksys was a snap to set up with the great web-page setup, but it locked up on me (as it does on a percentage of other users) often...The SMC was slow on my setup...don't know why, just was.
Great price....I paid $100 about a year ago....
Netgear has been running for 4 months without a reset.
I have tried Freesco, it's an excellent solution, but definately more work to setup and maintain, and more costly. The NetGear has the most cuztomizability (is that a word?) of the SOHO Gateway's -- it may be a little tricky to setup at first but the extra speed and features are worth it IMO.
OK. Well, gonna get a few rounds of CS in, then I am gonna hit the sack so i can wake up early enough to be first in line at compusa(god i am patehtic). Any further input is greatly appreciated!
I went to compusa today, had them call bb, but bb was outa stock, so i had them PM cc's price of 110. After tax and all my total was $117, not that bad. so i end up paying $37, oh well, still a nice price!
Well, I need some ends for my roll of cat5 cable to test the switch part(unless someone has some extra patch cable they want to donate to "Andrew's Cable Fund"). And I ordered dsl on friday, so that may be awile. I am actually thinking of ordering adelphia powerlink to hold me over till my dsl, lol.
You guys that are just now getting broadband and buying routers are lucky as there are so many cheap solutions out there. I started with a proxy then used ICS before I got a RT311 last year for a killer price when you were able to stck coupons at Staples. I have then switched to Freesco late last fall just to try something new and I have stuck with that after finding all the extras it can do. Now I see RT314s for free or $20, SMC with print servers going for $30 or $40 and other great deals.
I do not think you will be disappointed in the Netgear, now that they have the new firmware for port ranges. I still have my RT311 for the hell of it, just sits in the box in case my Freesco machine dies.
I also have Powerlink and it really is not bad at all . I've been able to downlad from macromedia's site at 275kb/s (2.75 mbit!). So far, it's better than any DSL I've seen.
my buddy has powerlink in the same city as me, he gets about 1.5megs. Using dap really helps, he has pulled 600Kb downs from good servers! But the upload cap is 128, so that is why I am getting dsl in the long run...
It opens up multiple simultaneous sessions to a server, and effectively multiplies your download speed by the amount of seesions opened on the server(up to 7). search for it on Google! You will fall in love with it!
Worth its own thread, gogeeta! I HATED all download managers, and had given up on ever finding one that would effectively help pull down gargantuan game dem...ahem, OS patches, but one that wouldn't be so damn intrusive as RealDownload or as crashy as GoZilla. Thanks for the tip!
I tried DAP and it didn't accelerate for starters, my cable connection was faster. Plus, you have to factor in it "reassembles" the file at the end. On my 366Mhz Thinkpad that took about a minute on larger files (where DAP should be used.)
