ok well what you obviously need to do is make friends with some tech support guys and get an inside tip on how to side step these stupid policies.....its like being nice to the secretary because she knows everything first and will clue you in. Just basic social dynamics of the office.

I have no problem with them deleting anything they don't want but I'd like to pwn them if they can't really send out a program that will identify and delete instant messengers.

It's easy to monitor traffic and actually detect the programs. If you violate company policy regarding computers, you may lose your workstation, be terminated, or restricted to a workstation under strict regulations and access.

The choice is yours.

I love this. In prior jobs I would find somebody abusing net time and IM'ing, and I would restrict them to only be able to use email and local apps. Everything else was locked out for them.

It's quite simple to tell if someone has an IM client on their pc. Where I work, we'd probably just put a little vb prog in the company login script that would search the hard disk for specific executable names, and then dump out a text file with all the names of the computers it found them on along with the user who logged in on it. Beware! IT sees ALL!

Yep, we pay people to work, not to chat with their friends, or check their personal emails 🙂

In my case I beg for more work, but they insist on paying me to be idle. So if they turned off the web, I'd had to go jump out the window. Can't sit and stare at my cube walls all day, can I?

Follow your company's policies unless you want to get fired.

I don't mind getting fired. They almost fired me when they (Tech Support) discovered that I had a different keyboard connected to my PC than the one that was issued to it.

VeggieFrog works for a company that has that policy and software to detect chat programs.

I know they can find the software with a program but what program can find and delete the program? None, is my guess.

Citrix can easily do this.

Citrix can delete programs that are installed locally?

yeah, well...good luck with that.

There is no way they can tell what you are doing and what programs you installed. They can't really sned out a program to identify and delete instant messengers. that's unpossible.

On a more serious note, no they are not pulling your leg.

Heck, I'd like to see them try to uninstall the IM I run from my jump drive.

Is your PC connected to a domain? If it is, they can pretty much monitor or modify your computer anyway they see fit.

We run a program called altiris on every computer... We can install, uninstall, all kinds of stuff on any computer in the lab.

All workstations are set to check into the server every 120 minutes. At that time they will pick up the new policy and enforce it. The epo agent will enforce the policy every 60 minutes from that point on. When an unwanted program is found the primary action is to ?Clean files automatically? and the secondary action is to ?move files to a folder?. This policy covers all unwanted programs ? not just the ones we?ve listed but also any McAfee has added into the dats. So far the ?unwanted programs feature? has not tagged any of our legitimate programs. So we plan on doing a full system scan either this weekend or next and change the secondary action to ?delete?. This would then remove all unwanted programs as well as the instant messenger files we have defined.

That is the message all employees just received.

You are right. They have found that I am running an IM on my system. But you know what...it say's that it is unable to clean it!!!!

Ha ha mofos!

When I say, "mofos" I am referring to IT, not you guys.
