Is Tech Support pulling our legs?

At my place of business, Tech Support said that instant messengers are prohibited and therefore we (users) need to uninstall them.

Tech Support went on to say that next week they are broadcasting a program that will find users with instant messengers installed and the program will remove it for them.

Are they just putting the fear in us?

Its possible.. u can watch for traffic types.. we used to use a product call packeteer that id's all type of traffic..

http://www.packeteer.com/

but you can use it for everything else..

use aimexpress or yahoo over web.. thats not installing IM clients.. 🙂

ok well what you obviously need to do is make friends with some tech support guys and get an inside tip on how to side step these stupid policies.....its like being nice to the secretary because she knows everything first and will clue you in. Just basic social dynamics of the office.

It's VERY easy to not only find out that there's an IM, but to also log every msg.

I have no problem with them deleting anything they don't want but I'd like to pwn them if they can't really send out a program that will identify and delete instant messengers.

It's easy to monitor traffic and actually detect the programs. If you violate company policy regarding computers, you may lose your workstation, be terminated, or restricted to a workstation under strict regulations and access.

The choice is yours.

I've been in Tech support (pretty much all levels) and System administration for 5 years and I can tell you with certainty that it can be done quite easily. Follow bhanson's advice and adhere to company policy, there are ways around almost any system, but it really isn't worth it to lose your job just so that you can chat on AIM.

Citrix can easily do this.

VeggieFrog works for a company that has that policy and software to detect chat programs.

Where I worked we even set up a software inventory program to run on startup and compare against a list of allowed software. We didn't have the budget for a remote software management suite, but it's not too hard to send a tech down to un-install and an email to a supervisor 🙂

yeah, well...good luck with that.

There is no way they can tell what you are doing and what programs you installed. They can't really sned out a program to identify and delete instant messengers. that's unpossible.

On a more serious note, no they are not pulling your leg.
