i'll be going to a brother's house for the summer. is it unreasonable to bring my computer and monitor (2001fp in the box it came in)?

my brother says there's a chance that the airport confiscate to have some dick security guard take it home "for further testing" and me never see it again?
while i think he's full of $hit, my dad has a reasonable reason why i shouldnt... x rays vrs data.. x rays win

will they try to force it through the x ray machine, even if it's a carry-on and kill my data and bioses? shoud i just leave it at home? but i  my computer

First of all laptops now are quite affordable. Why the hell do you want to adjust the multi, voltage, bus, ram on a laptop. Just buy how fast you want it and it will clock itself appropriately thats even smarter than resetting it over and over again. They do have pretty decent battery life, not that it matters since you plan on bringing a huge comp anyways, which means you going to have an AC connection. Laptops have good couling and high res screens. Upgradable form factor isn't gonna happen because of the limited space on the laptop. You went it light, then less space. You do realize that there are laptops that 5 lbs which isn't even close to 5 kilos.

adjustable so that i can change them... duh. like running high fsb with lowest multi, lowest voltage for battery usage, high fsb with high multi, high voltage for ac usage. i like messing with things :D

you also missed the point of a laptop having ALL of the attributes listed, not just a few
5kilos, yeah, its heavy as hell for a laptop, but thats what i'm willing to carry
its also why i still have a desktop, but may put it all in a large breifcase-case mod, but thats if i can find a nice breifcase that fits what i need it to.

there are programs that let you fine tune exactly when speedstep kicks in, and how much and where to. and what the fans are at. at least for dell notebooks. d series. and notebooks have higher resolution screens than desktops, for the most part. how many 1920x1200 17" desktop LCDs have you seen? oh, that's right, 0. notebooks have them. you can get a 15" notebook screen with 1600x1200 resolution... you'd can't even get 1280x1024 in a desktop lcd of the same size. i seriously have to wonder what crack the LCD makers are smoking to think that people get these high res LCDs for notebooks but wouldn't want a high res LCD for desktops. a 20" widescreen desktop monitor should do 1920x1200 if not better. goddamn samsung

You can do all of those things through 3rd party programs, usually open source. If you say you like messing with things, then you can mess with all that code too... I can adjust multi, fsb, voltage with my laptop and any a64 or sempron laptop on the fly. My 3000+ A64 should be more then enough power for anything you want and I regularly bring it down to 800mhz to browse/type/watch movies. With 256 dedicated and another 256 allocated video memory, I run most games pretty well on the Radeon 200M. Weighs 8lb with a 12 cell battery.

Actually, x-rays vs. data is a common misconception. It ain't gonna hurt nothin'. The thing is, that TSA likes to see all the electronic devices turned ON if they're carryon. Checked, they don't much care about.

Personally, I'd ship it.

ok, your reasons are getting more idiotic as the time passes. You don't want to buy a laptop, good enough.

yeah the dell d800 does that, doesn't it?

i guess it would be impractical to buy one and then remove the screen?

but you need a controller that costs like 500 bucks. the pannel alone costs about 200 on ebay. i considered it for a long time, but got the 2001fp when it was cheap

Oh, and if you check it, all they do is run the bombsniffing dogs over it. Unless your computer smells like a bomb, they won't give it any scrutiny at all. Most carry-on inspection people have seen computers before (but not all) and will, at worst, run the dog by it. But if you get an asshole on a power trip, they may want you to power it up to make sure it's not a bomb (I'm not sure wtf the idea behind that is, because if it IS a bomb, you're obviously going to trigger it in-flight, and you're obviously going to die. It's only slightly lesser to BLOW UP THE FRICKING TERMINAL instead), so make sure you have a power cord handy.
