Is svcd backwards compatible with vcd?

If a dvd player supports vcd, does that mean it supports svcd too? I have this old ghetto toshiba sd k710 and it won't play this svcd I recently burned. Now I'm new to the whole vcd scene and I think I probably did something wrong.

I encoded it as svcd in tmpgenc, burned it as an svcd in nero 6.6, nero confirmed it, and then I popped it in my dvd player.

No, Svcd is never than Vcd, and therefore you would need equipment for decoding svcd.

Er.......the "S" stands for "super".

So just like a CDROM drive won't play a DVD, a player that only reads VCD won't read a SVCD.

However, a DVD drive will read a CDROM, and player that supports SVCD will play a VCD.
