Is steam down?

I haven't been able to login to steam for about 6 or 7 hours now, yet my server has been full most of this time.

So apparently steam is only out for a (large) portion of it's users.

My guess is that the equipment containing the account info for the affected users is down...

Funny thing is that even OFFLINE mode is disabled for us at the moment.

i assume that for those of us who are getting "steam down" errors -- if we had pulled the plug on our NIC before booting up/logging into Windows, we would have been granted access to offline mode?

anyway, this is annoying. i did a re-install lately and haven't installed any of my other games yet so I just wanted to play some CSS.

I think you're right that if we'd pulled the cat5 out of our nic before we clicked onto steam we would've had offline mode(I don't have steam run when my windows boots up).
Who would've known?
I'd like to at least be playing against some bots right now...

sometimes you can get in, sometimes you cant.

This is why Steam is a bad idea. Because it's not completely reliable and because we don't know how long Valve will be able to run it and whether they will unexpectedly shut down due to extreme circumstances, we don't know whether we're able to play the games we paid for whenever we want.

According to many of the people here, that's a feature. At least this was widespread enough so we don't have people blaming it on user error (yet).
