Is spending $200 on my GF's present appropriate?

if you know she'll like it, then get it.. for me, if i find something that my fiance would like, i get it.. wether it's $20 or $200

Depends how old you are. If you're in you're late 20's or in your 30's its not as much of a big deal...however if you're <25, I'd say not only is it too much, its a waste of money and may even backfire on you.

A thoughtful present that may not cost that much is much, much more effective than an expensive present. It shows you care enough to put some thought into it rather than just plop down a bunch of money for an item.

Think about it this way....if you get her a $200 present for her first b-day, how are you going to top that the next b-day and xmas....and so on....

This is trickle down gf economics at work

Ok - wow some very polar opinions on here.

The typical GF economics don't work for her, she's not spoiled and what makes her happy I think is worth it.

If she's not comfortable celebrating monthly anniversaries with you, what makes you think she'd be comfortable receiving a $200 birthday gift from you?

Spend $100 dollars taking her out. Take her to a nice bar for cocktails, then take her to a really nice restuarant. Then get her a nice, but >$100 present.
