I'd trust the higher value more... Also, are you sure it's speedstep and not speedfan? I'd download newer versions of both if available. On a P35 DS3R board w/E2160, both speedfan and coretemp reports the temps for me.
I'm sorry it is speedfan. Speedfan reports Core 0 at 31 C and core 1 at 31 C idle. My videocard is at 56 C idle. HD is 50C. IF I run Prime 95 small FFT speedfan reports the core 0 is at 63 C and core 1 is at 63 C. Everything is very stable. HWmonitor reports 78C on both cores on Prime 95 and 48 idle on both. The sppedfan version is 4.33 and the HWmonitor is 1.08.0.
Core temp reports the exact same as speedfan. I feel like I have a cool running chip. 31 C idle for both cores and 60-63 C when running Prime 95. All this is with the FSB at 355. Does this seem pretty good?
See what the guy who made RealTemp has to say about e8400 temps http://www.xtremesystems.org/f...owthread.php?p=2809778. I was really worried my proc would fry using my old thermalright xp120 heatsink. Now I'm not so worried, unless I'm overclocking.
