Is special cooling required for WD Raptor hard drives?

I have a Western Digital Raptor 74GB (10,000rpm) SATA drive that is only a few days old. On two occassions it has stopped functioning. When the computer was turned off, and it had cooled down, it resumed normal operation. This sounds like a thermal problem.

My question is this: Has it been your experience that Raptors require cooling to avoid thermal problems?

rma time.

hd's do not necessarily require active cooling.

but my raptors all have a fan blowing inlet air on them just coz my cases have them.

Your problem doesn't really sound like any kind of thermal issue to me, unless you have an absolutely crazy hot case and no ventilation at all. A single Raptor should be fine with the basic front and back exhaust fan that most all of us use. And even if it were overheating, it probably wouldn't just shut down, it would just get hotter and more likely to die an early death.

Sounds like some other misconfiguration or a bad drive to me.

no, although they are a few degrees warmer than my seagate 7200.7 which is having some smart problems after 6 months of use, raptors do not need special cooling, mine idles at 34 and my 4800+ idles at 40C

As long as you got air flowing across the HD, you're fine. Seagate HDs get really hot if you don't have a fan blowing on it. I got a Seaget 7200.8 in an ext. enclosure. That SOB heats up like a grill.

You can use "Speedfan" to monitor the temperatures of your raptors. It is always better to have a fan over your HDDs, but they should still work without it.

I make sure i have a bit of direct airflow over my HDs, even a 5v 80mm fan is enough to make sure they won't overheat. You can have them running passively but i wouldn't recomend suspending them without direct airflow. This goes for raptors as well as normal drives. The difference isn't all that huge.
