is spdif out same as optical out

my new stereo has an optical in on it but before I go and buy a 20 ft optical cable in order to connect my computer to my stereo I want to make sure that spdif out is the same as optical out... does anyone out there know?

Optical out from your soundcard to optical in to a receiver should work just fine. That's what I'm using right now.

Order the cable online. Most retail stores overcharge a lot on cables.
