Is SP2 really necessary?

The general consesus I believe is that SP2 is good, with a small minority disliking it. You may experience some problems if you update a non-fresh install (that is, you already have lots of programs, driver etc. installed), though this didn't cause me any problems, just heard of it. A fresh install with SP2 slipstreamed is always best.

It's necessary in at least the way the same softwares require or they won't install. For instance, Visual Basic 2005 Express (and probably other Visual Studio stuff)

Look you will missing out the daily dose of patches and fixes that are needed to keep out all the "malware" being released every day. I have installed it more than a dozen XP PCs at work and home without any problems. I had been unneccessarily fearful at first based on what I read in these forums.

I've had SP2 on a system and had to reinstall because it made it unstable.

I really hate SP2 and all the bullshiet it adds; no I don't need to be notified constantly that I don't have a fvcking software firewall, no I don't need you to tell me I need an antivirus scanner because this machine never sees the retardweb, no I don't need the extra 100MB of ram usage so you can fill my system up with more bloatware, forcing me to upgrade,

no I don't need that POS "firewall" that comes with windows SP2 "improved", no I don't need improved WIFI capability because the windows utility sucks balls and the IBM version is much more sophisticated,

no I don't need more features for Iexplore because it browsing with iexplore on any machine will cause it to be infected opposed to a machine with FF, no I don't need WM9 because I don't want to sign an agreement allowing MS to add updates in the future to enable them to access my computer if they believe I have copyrighted materials that I "didn't pay for". No I don't need the instability that comes with SP2 just so that I can clain I have the "latest updates", so therefore I don't need SP2. That pretty much sums up everything about SP2.

The only worthwhile feature about SP2 that I can see is the Bluetooth support I could really use for my laptop, I have a bluetooth phone+laptop and the utility that comes with the laptop won't really help me use the cellphone as a "modem" but neither does the USB so... (It's suppose to)

It's a necessary step forward. Not installing it is knowingly leaving your computer open to attack. Even if you're anal and want to go through and disable all of the security stuff that comes with it, it should be a required install just for the security patches it includes.

I was a bit skeptical at first, and for several months stuck with SP1. I eventually go around to installing it, but it brought up some issues with my MS Networking Hardware.

The second time I did it was with a fresh install of Windows XP Pro on a brand new HDD, and I didn't have any problems. Cheers!😉

i personally like FF better than IE as well but i have never caught a virus from ie. sounds like another operator error. all you have summed up is that you have no idea what you are talking about.
