Is Sony's Trinitron better than Mitsu's DiamonTron tube?

Hey all,

I am going to get a new 19" monitor and am trying to decide if i want a Sony Flat screen or a Mitsubishi/NEC flat screen.

I Have heard that Sony has reliability issues, but their trinitron monitors give the best performance.

I have looked at the Mitsubishi and NEC monitors as well and they seem very nice. i also know that Mitsubishi CRT T.V.'s are among(if not "THE")tops in reliability, is this true with their monitors as well?

Now for the tough question, there is about a $100 difference between the Sony E400 and G400, anyone know the difference in performance?

As well, the Mitsubishi 900U is around $100 cheaper than the Pro model. the only difference i see is the Pro acts as a USB hub as well. anyone know how they compare performance wise?

Lastly, I have noticed the NEC moniters are $50-$100 cheaper than the Mitsubishi monitors, are the Mitsubishies more reliable or do they perform better or are you just paying fo the name?

any and all help with deciding between these monitors will be greatly apritiated. ( I'm kinda leaning twords Mitsubishi because of the reliability issue )

thanx

Both tubes got the lines. I have a Samsung 900NF which has a Mitsubishi tube. Specs are really good compared to others in its price range. I did extensive research before buying it back in August. The G400 has higher peak resolution and refresh rates compared to the E400. I am in no position to claim that one company's flatscreen is better than the other but I went strictly with price, performance, and reliability. Either brand tube is fine......just find the right company and the price that you want it for. Image quality matters a lot too but I took a gamble with this 900NF and turned out to be probably my best purchase computer related....

BOTH FD Trinitron and DiamondTron NF have lines, depending on your taste but technically they're very equal. I'd recommend going with Samsung SyncMaster 900NF, it has higher specs than both NEC and Mitsubishi, and the price is very good.

I have two Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 21TX attached to Matrox G400 Max. They are a few years old but I got them for $250 a piece (hot damn!). Anyway, they are beautiful but the do have the two lines across the screen(supports for the aperature grill). In fact I think the Diamondtron and the Trinitron are the same exact tube just different packaging and features. Hope this helps.

Arn't most monitors that say "Trinitron" on them by sony? Like the tube is by them. The only tubes that have the 2 lines accross them are sony, by what i know. Anyone wanna back me up?! :)

Trinitrons are made by Sony, and DiamondTrons are made by Mitsubishi, they're both Aperture Grille variants, which means they both have lines across them. Sony and Mitsubishi not only make monitors based on the Trinitron/DiamondTron tube, they also sell their tubes to other monitor manufacturers. Manufacturers using Sony FD Trinitron include Sony, KDS, CTX, IBM, ADI, Mag Innovision, Dell and ArtMedia. Manufacturers using Mitsubishi DiamondTron NF tubes include Mitsubishi, NEC, Samsung, Iiyama, ViewSonic and Acer.

popular trinitrons

kds avitrons
the viewsonic PF series
sony monitors of course
CTX's pro line
high end dell ones which are rebadges sonys

popular diamondrons

mitsubishis monitors
iiyamas visionmaster pro line (these are awesome monitors btw)
nec FE and FP line (i'd recommend the FP line, better refresh rates)
samsung NF series

There really isnt much of a difference. Sony's patent on trinitron expired, thus diamondtron was made. Both are good, the lines shouldn't bother anyone. Doesnt bother me on my kds av195tf. Trinitron technology lets more light through thus better colors and brightness, however supposedly shadowmasks in theory should be able to produce better text, which is why i imagine companies like Eizo dont use trinitons, and artists like trinitrons better from the colors, etc.

Only one technical difference (that I know of ...) between a Trinitron and a DiamondTron CRT. Current Trinitrons have a 0.24/0.25mm stripe pitch, whereas the DiamondTrons have 0.25/0.27 pitch. The first number is the pitch for the center area of the display, the second number is for the corners. I can tell a very slight difference comparing the two types of CRT side-by-side.

If you want a 19" Trinitron, I'd recommend the IBMP96 over the Sony G400.

If you want a 19" DiamondTron, I'm partial to Iiyama, so I'd go for their new i90A.

I have both Viewsonic, Sony, Mitsubishi (900u), and my latest the NEC/Mitsubishi FP950, I like all of them... my fav are the Mitsu and NEC... NEC being the highest performance one I have, both have the same tube with the NEC having better electronics for higher resoultions and refresh rates... and it's a little less $$$, both are great, love them both... NEC will replace your monitor with a new one in 2 days during your full 3 year warranty period with them... that is the best I have ever seen.. Viewsonic and Sony have a really horrible support team... they send refurb or repair and never is right from that point on... I also have a Sceptre D97A which oh... don't even get me started... that was just crap out of the box...been refurbished going on 8 times... still broken... 2 years later... going back again...

Trinitron & Diamondtron are essentially the same. It is my uderstanding that the major difference between them is the gun. I believe that Trintron uses 3 guns and Diamontron uses 1 gun; if I'am wrong, someone will correct me. The Sony & Mitsubishi sites should have the technical details. I've owned both types and IMO, both produce an excellent picture. Currently, I have a Diamondtron based monitor.

I have both running on a dual monitor setup:
Sony CPD-220VS (17")
Mitusbishi Pro 900u (19")

When I split a screen (a web page for example)accross the two monitors, there is no difference in sharpness or color saturation. Both are excellent.

Right now you can purchase the Mitsubishi Diamond +91 for about $100. less than the Sony E-400 Trinitron.
I like the Sony slightly more, but not $100. more ................... !

I was concerned with the "joy-stick" type of screen adjustment on the Sony, ...... it works easily enough once you get used to it, but seems like a likely source of trouble over time ....... ?
I hope I'm wrong about this .................

Davegod75:

Check the Samsung SyncMaster 700NF, the highest spec'ed 17" right now.

Midnight:

The i70A specs are inferior to the SyncMaster 700NF.

tboo:

Only DiamondTron NF 22" tubes are 0.24/0.27, all smaller models are 0.25/0.27.

I have an IBM P96(19" Sony FD Trinitron) and it has excellent picture quality. I haven't really seen, too many Diamondtron monitors, but I have seen a lot of FD Trinitron ones, including mine, and the picture quality is very good. Where I work they use a lot of Dell computers using the Dell P991(19" FD Trinitron) and Dell P1110(21" FD Trinitron) monitors and they all look great.
