A few years ago my 20 pin atx fortron 350w PSU melted into the motherboard connector. Surprisingly it still worked (!) it just had charred black plastic everywhere. I kept using it until it kept getting more burned and then torched the motherboard. I bought a new motherboard/cpu/ram combo on ebay.

I also went to best buy and bought a top of the line antec PSU, it worked for a few weeks but then its connector got burned too. At this point I knew it was not the PSU but my computer/case/house. I also decided to buy an expensive cyber power surge protector ($30, hey that is expensive to me!).

I returned the burned up PSU to best buy (they never even noticed) and bought an antec true 550w PSU on anandtech from someone. I still could not get the cpu/mobo/ram I got on ebay to post reliably. They never really posted more than a few times and that was with a lot of screwing around.

I was/am really busy and I had my wife's spare laptop so I used that for 2 years.

Fastforward to now... I just built a completely new rig with all new parts with the exception of my old case and my Antec PSU that I never used more than a few days that I got from here. It will not boot up, the BIOS 3.3V rail is showing up as 2.9V and it does not recognize any of the SATA hard drives.

Back to best buy, I bought a NEO 550w PSu last week. It worked fine without incident until last night. It would not turn on and recognize everything until I unplugged all of the USB devices (took a while to figure that out, perhaps it was just coincidence that it worked after I did that).

And now the real problem, I woke up this morning and my PC was off. I can't get it to turn on. The neo PSU doesn't do anything. I even shorted the atx pins to get it to turn on and no dice. It is like an internal fuse is blown. It does absolutely nothing. I also tried it on that same ebay mobo/cpu/ram from above and it does nothing. My old antec from anandtech still posts the system but I cannot see the SATA raid hard drives so I can't boot up. I have not done any other troubleshooting, I'm going to best buy to return the NEO and buy a new PSU until I can get my old antec RMAd (still under warranty I think/hope).

So there you have it... what is my luck with power supplies??? Could something be up with the case? I have never had a problem in the past 2 months with the old pentium III 500mhz I've been using since the hard drive in the laptop died. And none of the laptops have had power issues. I am so confounded by this issue I'm pulling my hair out. Back when the original PSU melted onto the mobo we had an electrician come check out to check the electrical in the house and he didn't find anything except that the main wires were loose at the breaker box and he tightened them up. Thanks so much for any advice!!!!!

it's antec ^^. They haven't exactly had the best rep lately. And your bad luck increases when you buy cheapo PSU. Stop buying them from bestbuy coz i'm sure you're paying $100++ for these PSU. Order it online and get a seagate, ocz, enhance, etc...

Why did you insist on buying another antec... and from BESTBUY!!!! after the truepower was ... insufficiant, shall we say? Look, even if you do buy antec for the prices, there are better values out there, (see enhance 5140gh thread in general hardware). Enermax is a mfg a lot like antec. They are popular, make lots of psu's, but the difference is their psu's consistantly are more reliable. In conclusion, I would say it is your hasty desicion process in choosing a psu, not you bad luck (which may very well be bad) which is the cause of your psu woes.

PS. What is your rig. I will bet you you don't need 550w of powa.

I bought an antec @ BB most recently because I wanted the most expensive one just to see if that fixed anything. I knew I was taking it back once I got my original Antec RMAd. I was/am hoping to get through this by jst having my original 550 true power fixed.

I think it is silly to say that it is my hasty decision that has caused this, these power supplies should work as advertised and I've read all the threads both on the neo and other antecs and while a lot of people have problems a lot of people have good experiences and I only found one other person that had a situation where their PSU would do nothing. You guys are right though I will NEVER by another antec PSU for as long as I live. If they won't fix my old one I will bury it and buy something else online.

my rig:

celeron 3.2ghz (waiting for my 6800 EE to come in stock)
asus p5w DH
2x1GB OCZ platinum edition
1xX1900 Crossfire Edition (not in xfire mode)

1xUSB DVDRW
1xUSB logitech mouse
1xUSB WD HDD
1xUSB MFC printer/scanner
1xUSB digital camera

4x5400RPM HDD
2x7200RPM SATA HDD

If I were to go into crossfire mode I think a 550w PSU would be appropriate.

I should add that I only found that these NEO PSUs suck after I bought one so in that regard I made an uninformed decision. I knew it was going back though. The reason I shopped at BB was because it is the only store in town that carries parts like this and doesn't have a 15% restocking fee, there is no Fry's.

well I bought another PSU today (non-Antec) and I'm back in business. We'll see how long this one lasts (!).
