I am on a T1 LAN in a school.

I have ZoneAlarm and its securty log shows that a particular IP address in my school is Pinging me and trying to connect to my NetBIOS for almost 100 times these few days. Should I be concerned?

what is the IP and we'll tell you? :)

just kidding. this guy is trying to exploit the most common security muck up of them all. Sharing your computer with MS networking. That is what the netbios/tcp attempts are for.

What can they possible get? Depending on how your computer is setup...every thing that you have access to when sitting at the keyboard.

I would contact your schools IT department, they generally look down on things such as this and take swift action.

Get a software or hardware router and start blocking some IP's, that will stop him dead in his tracks...

The guy may not be doing it on purpose. Some viruses try to spread themselves by using your 'net connection to scan for open netbios shares on remote PC's.

CTR makes an excellent point. Many attempts to compromise a system are simply scripts that have been released into the wild. There probably is not a person sitting at a machine trying to access your box, but rather an infected computer.

Even if it's just an infected computer, it's still a good idea to report it to your IT department so that owner of the computer can find out what's going on.

I contacted my school's computing office. i hope they do something about it. The particular machine is still pinging me and probing my ports every hour regularly.
