Is social skills one of the most important skills in the world?

They're the most important skills you can have, period. Unless you intend to spend your life alone in a hermit hut. The best way to improve them is to practice. It's the sort of knowledge that's hard to relate in an effective and usable way through literature, at least in my experience.

Getting (most) jobs is more about who you know than what you know. Try to put yourself in your interviewer's shoes; why should they hire you instead of their boss's nephew because that's who you're really likely competing against, not all the other stranger's CVs who were pre-screened strait into the trash, especially for entry level positions in most fields.

You can't just be all like... awwww shit wish I knew people who did important stuff all of a sudden after 25 years of goofing off.

Its more about the types of people you surround yourself with your whole life.

In terms of getting a job?

Any tips on improving social skills?

We'll start with meeting new people.

When first introduced to another person, lead with a compliment and follow with a question. If you can't find anything to compliment, reverse it and lead with a question and follow with a compliment.

or pull out your phone and look at it while walking to the restroom, so you can camp there for a while until the coast is clear.

Women are very social creatures and you don't see very many of female executives so I think that throws your theory out the window.

Women are sociable but that doesn't automatically mean they all have all important social skills, i.e. leadership.

Socially acceptable assertiveness is a social skill too, and a fundamental one in negotiations, and apparently women lack that and thus fail to negotiate salaries as high as their male peers (research says it).

It can help with getting a job, depending on the job. Matters more in marketing and sales, less in say a technical job or an accounting job.

The best way to improve your social skills is to do it. As a nerd I forced myself into social situations. Drinking and drugs help.

Yes like it or not social skills are the key to a happy, well adjusted life. Those without social skills generally are not as happy. They can complain about it and/or deny it but it's true.

More important than booksmarts.

Absolutely.
I was shy and had a bit of stutter back in the days.
I can honestly say I slowly build up my social skills.
Its really about knowledge. It helps you to converse with people about any topic without feeling inept.
And of course it helps with the ladies too. Took me this long to find a wife.

Almost as important as grammar skills.

Intelligence, education, and professional writing skills matter.

"Is social skills one of the most important skills in the world?" ... Really?!

Are social skills, which comprise a set of specific skills associated with interacting with other people, some of the most important skills in the world?

At least try, man.
