Is she addicted?

To make a long story short, wife's friend comes to visit us for few days. She makes a good living with her bf but they don't have any savings and their apartment doesn't have much furniture. She sees our apartment and is like wow, it is really nice and homey feeling. I couldn't figure it out why they have nothing until the wife tells me after her friend leaves. She basically hits the pipe(pot) everyday and has about 3-4 glasses of wine.

Is she addicted and do you think she needs help?

If her habits are part of the reason they have virtually nothing, then I would say she is definitely addicted.

The two of them make about 100K and live in Vermont. They have nothing between them. She lives paycheck to paycheck and can't figure out why she has no money saved up.

That makes her both addicted and a dumbass if she can't figure out where her money is going.

there's something wrong in that picture. a couple making 100K, no kids. maybe she's not the only one who has a habit(s).

Money management is relative.
Drug addiction can be debilitating, just by the thought process. If an addict isn't ready for help, though, little good amy come of it, imo.

yeah dude... pots not bad unless you let it take over your life. say she's smoking 20 bucks a day worth, maybe 10 on wine, say 30 a day on the "finer things in life" that comes out like 10k a year. this is really general but she could be smoking more or less, or her husband is hitting up something too...

He actually got her started in alot of it. I have also heard they dip into some of the other exotic drugs. My wife and I are like you need to get your life straight but she doesn't think its a problem. Shes not the brightest person but sometimes its hard not see what you are doing. She will totally flip when she sees our house and she is still living in the crappy apartment.

If they are making 100K per year, and have nothing between the two of them, and are living in an apartment paycheck to paycheck, there has to be something more than pot and wine. Even if they were only taking home 60K per year after taxes, that is 5K per month. It can't cost 5K a month unless they are living in an outragously expensive apartment or own cars that are extremely expensive.

The only thing I could think of is if they are buying very special weed, or wine that costs $50 a bottle. This is easy to do I suppose, but you'd think that she would know where the money was going if this were the case. I one of them (or both of them) are into some hard, expensive drugs and habits, but aren't willing to face the reality of the situation.

There's no way that two people making about 50K apiece per year spend all there money on POT. No way in hell. I'll bet there's some "downhill skiing" going on there. A lot of that, I'll bet. That's where the money goes.

It could be due to the region that they live in - the neighborhood is rich? Houses around that area cost in average of . . . ?

Anyhoo, I think they're addicted. I'm sure people can spend a lot of money on weed alone. Think about (cigarette) smokers, and how much their annual budget would be to continue their addiction if they smoked a pack/day . . ..

it's hard to believe that she'd be totally out of control and maintain a 50k job... but maybe, pro sports and movie people do it

That's not an addiction... that's an obsession.

DSM-IV Definition of "Addiction"

An addiction does not necessarily mean a chemical dependency. Once you figure out what "addiction" means you may retract your statement. There are plenty of heavy marijuana users who become psychologically dependent on the substance. Granted, it's a LOT harder to become a MJ addict than a heroin or cigarette addict, but it's still possible.
