Is SDRAM still viable?

I was just wondering, cuz I'm still stuck at 128 and I need to get some more.
Should I stick with SDRAM or is it not worth it?

Depends on your system, when you plan to upgrade, etc. I recently shelled out $75 for a SDRAM upgrade for my gf's laptop. She also had 128 and XP was pretty slow. In her case it was worth it. On the other hand, its pretty cheap so why not just upgrade it? Or buy me a new system and I'll sell you my gig of SD cheap;):p

I'm running on win98, but I also plan to upgrade to win2000.

I can get you a good 386 system, and I'll make sure its new(mostly). So how much are we talking for the ram?

I guess my question was geared more towards "what new kinds of ram are there, and are any worth buying?"

I want a brand new, in the box system. Don't laugh, a friend bought a Acer that was NIB (486 tho) for amybe $40.

Anyhow, what I should have asked was do you plan on upgrading your hardware anytime soon?

Nope, I'm gonna keep the hardware for probably another year or so.
800 Mhz, Dell, PIII

I just realized ... If my motherboard is built for SDRAM, does that mean I can't even use anything other than SD?

sdr ram is expensive homie cuz i believe they don't even manufacture it no more. 512MB is like slighlty more than a hundo.

Nope. You should be able to get sticks of 256 cheap, but make sure they'll work in your board (ie not high-density).

I'm pretty sure you can't use DDR or rambus. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd get more SDRAM. Your system is plenty fast still. Check out FS/T though, you'll probably save a bit as people are getting rid of it now.

I would get more sdram, but I wouldn't spend more than $50 on it. Diminishing returns. You can get a cheap motherboard, 256mb of ddr400 and a barton 2500 for around $200, which would make more sense than spending $100 on sdram.
