is sata II, ncq (native command queuing) overrated ?

hi,

assuming i get a nforce 4 board with SATA II interface, does it make any sense to get a SATA II HD with NCQ or is it just marketing hype ?

i see a maxtor maxlineIII with all these features - but there's no way i need these capacities (300gb) which seems to be the 'smallest' of the maxline III on newegg ----> wasted money....

(I am totally fine with my current 120Gig....however i am wondering whether SATA II and NCQ improves considerably over my old WD120JB drive....)

My guess is (since I can't test those features) that it is not terribly useful for the average desktop user, or even gamer. I believe most disk accesses (sp?) are fairly sequential in nature when it comes to games and standard applications, thusly rearranging the instructions wouldn't really do much.

However, running a NCQ-compatible RAID array in a server might get a noticeable improvement. For your case, I'd say save the money and buy a better video card, processor, etc. You'll probably see a better return on your investment.
