Is SATA II backwards compatible?

I have a Gigabyte 8IPE1000Pro which has SATA controllers.

I have been using a first generation SATA drive without any problems.

I was looking at buying one of the new Maxtors, a SATA II 300 mb drive, and I saw a comment from someone to make sure that your mobo will support it. Is there a way I can tell ahead of time whether I'm going to have problems?

Yes, it's backward compatible.

It's similar to ATA 33/66/100/133. The newer technologies always supported the older drives.

Thanks, Sickbeast. So it sounds like the guy who complained that his onboard SATA controller didn't support the new drive had some specific problem that I shouldn't be concerned about.

Probably. Look into it to be absolutely certain. I'm 99% positive that backward-compatability is part of the SATA-2 spec.
