The region is only meaningful as far as our dependency on foreign oil. Thank god we threw the Republicans out, who were in bed with those established interests.

Oil isn't the main reason we are going to be involved with the Middle-East for a very long time. It has much more to do with our dependency on oil contracts being denominated in US dollars which is of greater concern in order to ensure demand for the US dollar doesn't tank globally.

This. As long as oil contracts are denominated in U.S. dollars, the government can finance itself and print money in perpetuity. The more the world resists the flood of exported inflation from these dollars, the more pressure there is for the U.S. to get itself involved militarily around the world to maintain the dollar's status.
