Is running 1 stick of 2gb much slower than 2x1gb?

Been wondering that. IF I purchase a 2gb stick and only populate 1 slot, will i lose dual channel?

thankie 🙂

Dual channel implies 2 identical sticks working together, hence the 2 channels 2 sticks thing. 1 Stick cant be dual channel because... it is one stick. However I dont know one way or the other what the performance difference would be, but I suspect dual channel is faster.

Dual channel is faster by a very very small margin...in most cases not worth it...however since you are going for 2 GB I say get 2 sticks since
1) windows can't adress more than 3 GB, so 4 GB of ram later on is kind of a waste
2) 1 GB sticks have lower latency
3) you get the whatever small benefit of dual channel

Dual channel is faster with socket-939, and in the case described, also massively cheaper - 2-GB DIMMs are overly expensive.
