is ripping a dvd data disk the same as a dvd movie?

The term rip is used for movies because they're usually encrypted and at the same time you're also usually transcoding them. If the DVD is just holding regular files you can copy them just like you would any other files.

Data files can be copied by Explorer - no ripping needed. Ripping not only entails encryption in many cases, it also involves extraction, and that is what gives rise to the term "ripping."
