Is Rift worth looking into?

I've read a bit about it, watched some trailers, etc. It looks interesting, but then again, I've said that about Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Aion, and a few others. Aion in particular was quite fun, but too full of bots and far too grind-y.

Anyway, Rift looks to be the highest budget (or at least nicest looking) MMO to come out in quite some time. I'm a bit intrigued, but I want to hear opinions from others. As a former WoW player that got tired of the constant raid and rep treadmill, and a former Asheron's Call player who loved the open-endedness of that game more than any other I've ever played, do you think it's worth looking into?

Rift has little grinding. I don't know if the betas are clearing characters or not, but if they aren't there were quite a few level 30's (cap for beta, but 50 is the launch cap) running around. It took me like two days to get just under 20.

If you liked WoW, you would like this.

Look around the net, you should be able to find a Rift beta key to give it a whirl. It's a huge download at roughly 8GB's but just set it to update overnight and you should be fine. I'm assuming you don't have a crappy dial-up internet account or a super slow DSL account. Gonna give Beta 6 a whirl which will begin on Feb 04 at 10:00AM. Downloading the beta files right this moment.

Is Rift first, or third, person view? Or can you choose? and for that matter, I've never played WoW, but I saw a video of it in 3rd person view...does it allow you to play first person view?

I just don't like third person view except for single player games like Dragon Age. Or Hitman Blood Money 🙂

Rift allows 1st and 3rd person. However, you don't see your weapons swinging (like EQ1, or Oblivion)... So its not very engaging (not sure of a better word.) I remember in EQ2 if you had the right settings, the 1st person was very well done. If a mob kicked you and you fell down, you'd literally fall to the ground and see your feet out in front of you. It would make me laugh every time it happened. Nothing that cool in Rift but I would like to see it.

I can't see first person being very good in an MMO. Especially endgame, you have to be very observant of your surroundings. That is something first person view would be terrible at.

Rift is the first MMO I've liked since I quit WoW a few years ago. I found it very fun, especially as a mage.

I really like the idea of being able to have 4 builds that you can switch between. Like in WoW you had to be specced a certain way for groups, but that spec didn't always work well for solo play. With this, it doesn't matter.

The only problem I have now is time. I don't get to play as much as I used to so I don't know that I would play enough to make it worth the $15 a month.

I've enjoyed Beta 4 and 5, and am looking forward to 6 when I get home from work tonight. However, Rift is not some sort of earth-shattering new game with tons of innovative features. If I was currently playing an MMO I liked, or was burned out on the genre, I would be a lot less interested.

But, I stopped playing WoW about a year and a half ago (after my guild cleared Ulduar), and took a complete sabbatical from MMOs. My batteries are recharged, so to speak, so I'm having fun and can see myself enjoying a few months of playing Rift.
