Is region coding a H/W or S/W issue...

Quick question, is DVD region coding a H/W or S/W issue? The reason I ask is because I ran driveinfo22 and it says that my drive does not have region protection 😕

i meant sw - I was talking about PC ones - all the drives are identical in that respect because a DVD drive does not necissarily get used to play movie DVD's, hence there is no need to make them region specific. Many (most?) DVD playing software packages allow you to run the software several times before finalizing which region you chose to stick with.

It's always firmware or software. You can bypass region free and macrovision a lot of times with a firmware upgrade. The thing is I've seen hardware support for macrovision...but you still have to enable it and set the appropriate registers via firmware/software.
