If I am downloading a file or program, my pc runs very slow. My browser takes 5 times longer to open a webpage. Does this mean the ram is had it, or would it be hard drive or other issues? Its an older HP by the way.

It is an Hp 4550z, celron 466 mhz,
192mb ram (brand unknown)
10 gb hard drive
windows 98 second edition
ATI Rage II graphics card 4 mb (dont laugh)
56k

It also freezes up which I forgot to mention (main thing). It will freeze and the only way out is to ctrl alt delete, then it crashes my desktop to where i have to restore it.

Another thing this has done for like 2 years now. Its hard to explain this . When I use the IE browser, like clockwork, it hesitates to open a page. It will open a webpage up with no problems for about a minute or so, then when I go to open a site, it will stop opening them, for like 1 minute or so, then all of a sudden, it will finish loading the paget. It is strange. I reformatted like 2 times, run defrag once a week since I have owned this thing, and run scan disk. I clear history, and deleted cookies, had adaware, spybot, and a ton of other spy programs, and did nothing. :(

It could be anything.

If that happened to me... I would format immediately. :p

If you still think its your RAM try this. :)

Well, you have a few issues going on here.

1. Your PC is pretty old
2. You've only got 192MB of ram
3. You're running Win98 which has HORRIBLE memory management

I doubt it's your ram. Ram on those older, brick-like, non-overclocked PCs typically dont' go bad, but anything is possible.

Try running defrag twice, just to make sure and reboot after each one.

Failing that, use that computer as a doorstop to hold the door open as you carry in your shiny, NEW computer. ;)

Good luck.

LOL, I think I will give up and do that last suggestion. I did try the defrag before, and it didnt help. Reformatted 2 or 3 times. I would use it as a football right now, but would brobably break my foot :) Cant wait till I get my new pc!!!!
