Is RAID1 "Hot swappable"?

So I was thinking about RAID1 and how its used on servers and machines that need as much uptime as possible, but I was wondering how much RAID1 really helps. Lets say I have two drives RAID1, one drive dies, will the computer keep going as if nothing had happened, or would it need to reboot in order to run off of the second and remaining drive?

most raid software that interacts with the controller will allow you to spin down the failed drive (and a hot-swap BIOS setting). then you just put a new drive in and it should start rebuilding automatically, depending on your setup of course.

So the OS never stops running?
