Is RAID really useless?

My personal experiences:
RAID-0: I built a box with 1G RAM, XP2500+ and 2 WD400JB hard drives and ran them in RAID-0 for about a year, then did a reformat/reinstall only without the RAID this time. I never noticed a difference. And no, my OS wasn't bogged down before, I don't download anything.

RAID-1: I have a dual PPro 200 router box that uses 2 7200 RPM SCSI drives in RAID-1. To make sure RAID was working after the array was built, I ran each separately and the RAID-1 was much quicker. This could be because the controller kept looking for the other drive, I don't know. I have heard SCSI has a better implementation overall and some controllers know where the heads on the drive are and can assign work accordingly. How intelligent is mine? I have no idea. I can drive a car and it can't. 😀
