First off, Quake 4 was not designed for multiplayer. Quake was always a single player experience.
Q3 was the bastard child and for some reason people like that one the most.
(I dont know why.)
Anywho, its a better SP experience than Doom3. But I hate Doom3 so maybe you shouldnt listen to me.

I only played one round of MP on D3 and none on Q4, so I cant compare the two games.
Have been told by my net-gamng friends that Q4 is better.

My recommendation is UT2004 for actual enjoyable gaming, or BF2 if you need the pretty graphics.

Quake 4 has a relatively fun single player. However, chances are, once you play through it once, you will never play it again. Multiplayer is okay. Think of Quake 3 with better graphics. I myself regret spending $40 on Quake 4.

Personally, I hated the single player...but there were lots of people who loved it.

I'd say Quake 4 is slightly better than Doom 3 in both single player and multiplayer, though they're very similar games. The graphics are very good, but every level looks the same for the entire game, so you'll get bored of the graphics quickly. Also the multiplayer community for both games has pretty much died by now, so you'll have a hard time finding people to play with.

Seriously...you think these programmers and developers would hire decent map makers. I'm seeing mod teams showing-up paid professionals while using tools that are less powerful. Now that's just sad!

I play Q4 multi almost every day and there is no shortage of people playing it. Plus there are still a ton of people playing Q3, I'd think most will eventually switch to Q4 down the road.

I have played all the quake games, and Q4 single player was a disapointment to me. I was expecting better gameplay.... the story was OK but it was very linear and I wasn't blown away by the graphics, zero replay value. Multiplayer is fun if you like Quake..... new twist on old weapons (nailgun, hyperblaster) and the old standbys (rocket launcher, railgun, grenade launcher), the dark matter gun is gay, typical BFG weapon.

If you are looking for another run of the mill FPS then Quake 4 is your friend. I had lowered my expectations after the craptacular DOOM 3, even then, iD did not deliver. iD is dead as far as I'm concerned...
If you want great graphics in an FPS: Far Cry/HL2
Good Single Player: HL2
Multiplayer: UT2k4/HL2

Sorry iD, you pioneered the FPS genre but its the end of the road. You haven't come up with a single meaningful innovation that took the FPS genre to the next level since Doom I,II, and Quake II (and no ..not being able to hold a flashlight and gun at the same time doesn't count)

It was decent ... there are better games out there to be had (Riddick), but there are also worse (D3) :p

Thats exactly how I feel. They got so into making this super cool new engine they forgot that video games are for entertainment.

Luckily we have Crysis coming out soon.
Hopefully they didnt forget how to have fun after one game.

graphics are good, game isn't.

It features more action than Doom3, so that makes it fun. But if you're looking for story, forget it. This contains a story similar to, the "princess is in another castle", but without the charm.
