Is Quake 1 freeware yet?

I was just wondering if Quake 1 was free yet? I thought they made it free long ago, maybe i'm thinking of the original Grand Theft Auto. I have quake 1 but there's no one to play with...which is very sad. Everyone's playing these new lame games like Battlefield 2 and CS:Source. I'd much rather play Quake 1 or Unreal Tournament online with others any day. I'd need Quake 1 to be free now to convince other's to play though, i think. Is it free yet?

If anyone's interested in playing you might want to check out FuhQuake, it juices up the graphics engine a bit.

FuhQuake is great....Dark Places is another good graphics mod for the original Quake.

source code for quake (as well as quake2, doom, wolf3d) has been free (under some restrictions) for years. but you still need the data from the full game to play it I think. or you can be a cheapskate and play just the shareware maps

There's 2 other players right there...let the fragging begin!... Well, that probably won't work out, unless we schedule something...and then we'd all probably forget about it. Oh well, enjoy single player :D

They do have Bots for quake as well, but...y'know *shrug*

Here's a few servers that sometimes have people on:
quake.trinicom.com (ctf i believe)
quake.shmack.net (Runes)
quake.singed.net (Also runes i think)

I still play Q1 Rocket Arena today with the Omnicron bots. On the hardest skill level, the bots are pretty damn good considering the age of Q1.

while not exactly free, I've seen/bought Q3 Arena off the jewel-case "value" racks.
I was lucky enough to find them on super sale at Circuit City for $2.50 each last Christmas, but I've seen copies on other racks, like at Best Buy for either $10 or $5.

I wouldn't doubt some place having a sale on the value-stuff this holiday weekend.

You can pick up Quake for like $5. I remember seeing it at a Barnes and Noble, and I said "What the heck, I might as well have the full version data." I've done the same thing with a few other shareware-era games, like Raptor.

The only games that become freeware because they are too old are DOS text-based games at this point. I don't think games like Doom or Quake will become freeware for a another decade. The source code is released for Doom and Quake but you need the data files (music, sounds, sprites, models, maps, etc) to play the game (a source port). The data files are NOT free and considered piracy to distribute.

You can buy a lot of good games on the 'value' racks these days. Q3, Fallout 1/2, Starcraft, Warcraft 2 Bnet, BG 1/2, etc.

Definitely a great game. Like others have said it's probably really cheap to buy. :)

Serious. I picked up SC Battle Chest (after losing 2 copies of SC) for $13. Not bad considering the unbelievable replayability of Bnet SC.

I'm not sure what online retailers may be selling it...you might be able to find it in the "bargain bins" of local retailers like Fry's or something...otherwise you might have to look on eBay, the FS/T forums here, etc.

They did release the source code, but that doesn't mean the game is freeware. I'm not sure where you can buy it other than used, or from ID's website...

But it's $25.

Quake

It's my favorite game of all time, so I think it's still worth $25. But for being as old as it is, it seems a little odd.

Pity that the online QW community is completely dead. There are a few QWDM tournaments/leagues with almost no players, with only the most hardcore remaining (or maybe those who haven't upgraded their PC for a decade) Other than that, there are a few Clan Arena and TF servers. And your normal FFA-DM servers with one guy that is good kicking the asses of 10-20 completely clueless people.

Battlefield 2 isn't lame...if you can yours to run smoothly and play with some good people it can be quite a fun game.

Sorry, I'm playing BF2. But Q1 is still installed and I throw down in CA every once in awhile.
