IS PVC pipe polyethylene?

is polyethylene PVC? I'm trying to paint PVC piping using this testors flat black spray enamel. I was just reading the label and it said not suitable for polyethylene and vinyl so that made me think that it might be PVC...

You might have better luck if you take some fine sandpaper and rough up the surface first. A wipe with some isopropyl alcohol couldn't hurt either. There are usually some oils on the surface. I haven't tried it so it may still not work. Try it on a small piece first.

I was told by the local paint experts here that the best paint to use it that bumber paint for the new plastic bumbers on cars. It comes in a variety of colors and msot auto centers carry it.

Hi Scott. I love Patio Paints for painting items for outdoors. For PVC pipe, sand lightly to give the pipe "tooth" to hold paint. Paint away and no need for sealer. I live in FL and with the heat, humidity and moisture, Patio Paints have held up very well. I found that Walmart offers the best prices for Pation Paints in my area. Hope this helps.

I use the following method to paint all of the painted spudguns that I sell. I prepare the surface using a very fine sand paper or scotchbrite pad. I then wipe it down with a rag with a small amount of laquer thinner to make sure the surface is free of all dust and oils. I apply a light coat of primer (white or gray) and then a coat of paint using a good rust-oleum enamel spray paint. As far as painting the round surface, the pipe must be vertical to avoid runs and drips.

They are probably taking more about the flexible vinyl that's in your car. You could also use an appropriate primer to keep one another apart if it is a chemical issue.

WOW! That is such an intelligent and insightful post. How long did you have to think about that reply? I am glad to see your education going to good use like that. Also how could I have possibly ruined this forum when over the last 2+ years I have been a member I have posted less than 30 threads? Back to the OT topic, I just use the cheapest black spray enamel I can find, (Walmart) let it dry WELL (a few days) and wipe the pieces down with a soft cloth. Built many items this way such as PC surround sound speaker stands.

It is poly vinyl chloride (not polyethelyne ) and I have a few pieces painted this way many years old. It will scratch off like any other paint but is usually quite durable indoors and out.
