Is PVC dangerous to my health?

I will probably post the whole story with pictures on here later, but right now, I am constructing a PVC instrument like the ones seen being used by Blue Man Group. To tune the pipes to different notes, I am using a table saw to cut sliver by sliver off from it until it is in tune with the desired note. During this, SEVERAL PVC "sawdust"/chips gather just like sawdust would. Is this hazardous? I have heard about PVC being dangerous wit the gases, but is this only an issue when burning it?

Is this is a health concern, will wearing a mask help? What makes it a danger? If it is a hazard, how bad is it? Should I just continue?

Thanks.

There's concern about the use of phthalates in vinyl. Apparently it can cause health problems, which is especially a concern because it's frequently used in children's toys to make the plastic softer. If you're going to be creating dust, some sort of breathing protection is probably a good idea. Of course, I think that's generally the case whenever you're doing anything that's going to be putting out a lot of dust.

Use a mask, it'll reduce the risk of those little flecks getting into your lungs.
