It is not a state. They get too much subsidy from the feds to ever want statehood.

Nope, it's not a state. It's a U.S. Protectorate. They are subject to our federal laws, but they have they own Government.

As I remember, about 1/3 of the voting population in Puerto Rico wants to become the 51st U.S. State. About 1/3 wants to become independent, and the last 1/3 wants to stay the way they are now.

:) I am from Puerto Rico, i can answer this :)

1. Puerto Rico is a Non-Incorporated US territory, meaning we are part of the US and we serve on the US millitary but we do not vote for the US president or pay federal income taxes. Federal laws rule here, although we have our own government with our local laws like every other state.

2. As for the percentiles its more like 4% independent, 48% pro state, 48% stay the same; its a very tight race. However lots of people dont realize, that whatever we choose, no matter how many times that party wins, it dont matter a thing, in the end the US decides :)

3. as a puertorican i have to say that our government has been plagued with corruption. the crime rate is pretty high. drug problem is pretty big. There are people that want to work and fix things but there are others who only want to steal or have their own agendas.

4. i am ready to go to the us or europe :)

nah, they'd just use the flag thought for when we annex canada, not like anyone in the US can count to 50 anyway.

My old roomate was from Aguadilla. I was thinking about moving there, he said his uncle might be able to get me a job at HP there. I'd still like to visit.

Puerto Ricans have US citizenship, however it is not the same sort of citizenship that americans on the US have since ours is given to us by a LAW that was passed pretty long ago and if the US decided to, they could throw that law out the door and all puertoricans living in Puerto rico would lose their US citizenship.
However, we have a US passport like normal americans have and we can move freely in the US. We can move to any state and if we live for more than one year on a US state then we become permanent residents/citizens and our citizenship cannot be taken away :)

I live pretty close to aguadilla, and yes there is an HP plant there. :)

PR is a nice place, you just got to know where to go and where not to go .it has its ups and downs like everywhere else.

It is US Territory right now.

Sooner or later it will become the US's 51st state. They hold votes there all the time and the last time they voted, it was closer then most previous votes to become a state. They do enjoy the protection the US Military has to offer as if it were a state, even a Bombing range ;)
