Is private registration necessary for domains

I wanna get a .com domain. The site is a personal site not a business . I am curious do i have to register the domain privately or use some whois guard to protect personal information. Is there a way to protect personal info from a whois search?

namecheap.com had free whois blocking for a while, not sure if they still do. Of course you have to register through them first.

Yeah just noticed that they still have that offer. But if i wanna go with another domain registrar and they dont offer any type of privacy feature , how would one go about hiding this info. Is it ethical to not use your real name in your personal info?.

If so, I'm one unethical SOB. I have an account with GoDaddy with real information, and another with fake. For "fun" domains, I use the fake one. For domains I care about, I use the real one. Just make sure you have a good spam filter on the email address you provide.
