Is Prime95 supposed to bog down my computer?

I always assumed that Prime95 was meant to drain all my computer of it's resources and therefore it is normal that it runs slow as hell when I have Prime running. So, is it supposed to be like this or do I have a wrong setting on somewhere that is making it utilize too much resources.

You can play around with the settings, but I do know that Prime95 is very good at pushing CPUs to their limits.

Yeah Prime will bring any system to its knees. Most people run Prime95 at default Priority of 1 and think that's taxing their system. If you set Priority at 10, your computer will be literally unusable while it's running. You can change priority level by accessing it under the Advanced menu. The option will be initially greyed out but you can access it if when you enter 9876 at the password option.

It defaults to low priority so it doesn't sap too much CPU resources. However if you set it to use too much memory, you'll start going hitting your swap disk and that's where you're probably start seeing sluggish performance.

When the CPU is at 100% isn't really a problem. You will use the CPU cycles on various taks and it can switch easily. THe part where it lags is when you use the blend tests and the RAM usage sky rockets and it is difficult use move the RAM and move program around to give them what they need as RAM is much slower than the actual CPU. But of course if you up the priority of the CPU in Prime it was also cause u system to practically die as it won't switch to other processes.
