Hi,

Excuse me I?m newbie..., I would want to build a pc arround a msi neo4 ultra platinum mb (or arround a Gigabyte K8NF-9 if I can?t get the firt one). So I?m interested in underclock the PCI-E graphic card (ATI x600 pro or x300). I?m wonder if it is possible do that from bios settings. If so, what bios settings do they allow do that ?. If not: would it be possible to do it from windows 2000/XP ?. Would underclock settings persist after the computer is powered off ?.

Any help would be very apreciated,

Thany you very much,

Greetings,

Lin.

You don't have to under/overclock the video card from the motherboard BIOS, you can do it via software and change the video card BIOS.

If you're trying to underclock to reduce noise I will also advise you to get the Soltek SL-K890Pro-939 motherboard. If you get a X300 video card make sure it has a 128-bit memory interface.

First of all thank you. For your words I deduce (I don't know if I'm right) that it's possible to do it also from the bios of any MB ?. What do bios settings allow to do it ?.

Thank you again.

Well, you won't do it from the motherboard BIOS. You will use a software utility to change the video card clocks. You could also edit the video card's BIOS to change the default clocks.
So it's not really important which motherboard you choose for this.

I'm curious, why do you want to underclock?

Today my graphical needs are scarce (2D only). But in the future no one known... Furthermore I would like it was as current as possible, and relatively silent...

Would you be so kindly of point me the utilities you refer ?.

Thanks,

You'll find links to them in the video cards forum, it depends on the video card you choose. The cards already operate at slower speeds when not doing anything demanding (2D), I don't think you'll see much of a benefit.
