is port forwarding safe

i am using utorrent and im wondering if opening one of my ports is safe. i am using a linksys befsr41 v3. im also using zonealarm. is there anything else i should do to keep my computer secure?
 
Opening a port is a security risk. Anytime something is listening on a port there is a much much much greater risk or it being broken into than if nothing is listening.
