Is poistive pressure better?

How should I setup my fans? My case is a Lian Li A05B. I have a Lian Li BS-03 as an intake blowing over the video card and and northbridge. The 03 would make that the 3rd 120mm fan in my case. Positive pressure helps cool or just keeps the dust out?

2x 1200
1x 800

senerio a
in
2 x 1200
out
1x 800

senerio b

1x 1200
1x 800
out
1x 1200

Depends on the total flow - equal flow generally yields the same cooling. Main benefit is keeping the inside of the case cleaner. That depends on keeping the intake filter(s) clean, plus it can take some work to seal up the case (extraneous venting and large gaps, etc.) well enough that excessive fans aren't needed to achieve in slightly> out.

equal intake/exhaust would be ideal, but usually not possible unless your case was 100% sealed. and thats assuming you're accounting for the cfm of your psu's exhaust.

other than that, positive/negative doesn't matter.

having cool (intake) blowing on your important parts (cpu/gpu/ram/nb/hdds) would be idea. other than those, the rest of your case doesn't matter.

having all exhaust would help in keeping out dust tho. or having exhaust on fans near the bottom of the case at least. since more dust is on the floor

i'm a fan (no pun intended) of positive pressure when it's suitable. in the near future i'll be building a monster system in a PC-A05NA with positive pressure, and at most 2 case fans + ps fan. the a05 boxes have the ps drawing from the internal volume of air, which will lower the effective pressure - i think it would be more effective to have the ps draw through a big hole directly under it (maybe a worthy mod?)

I like the pos press case best. No dust trapped around your drives, less noise. Even with no filters it is cleaner, I live very near the interstate so dust is a fact of life, compressed air a necessity,,, kinda like TP.😉

Louisss,

Sometimes one wonders whether you really think about what you write?

"having all exhaust would help in keeping out dust tho. or having exhaust on fans near the bottom of the case at least. since more dust is on the floor"

Can't have "all exhaust" (except in the case of fans) in the first place as there has to be some venting for the fans to draw air through if flow is the point. And anywhere the air is drawn through (unless filtered) dust will also try to come in (even through optical drives and such). Most cases have unfiltered gaps, vents, etc. where air and dust can come in. Positive pressure prevents air from coming in through those gaps and vents, only the intake fans definitely have to be filtered. Getting the case up off the floor, even just 8 or 10", can reduce dust in the system quite a bit. Air should be brought in low, generally low or bottom front (cool air = heavier) and exhausted high, upper rear or top of case (warm air = lighter, rises), use the aids (thermal physics) that nature provides for you in your cooling plans.

I'm a fan of positive case pressure...but I don't know why or how that changes the dust buildup in a case...

I also like to bring fresh air in from multiple locations if possible...keeps hot spots to a minimum. I have also been using the normal "exhaust" hole behind the cpu as a Intake for the latest quads. It has helped with the mosfet and VR temps.

Bottom line, you have to play with your case and see what works best. Remember, your case will bleed air out cracks, and your video card might be pulling air out of your case also.

In my sig you can see my Q9650...All of my case fans, 2-120 & 1-140 Yate Loons, blow in...none are set to exhaust. If I hold a piece of paper up to the rear of the case near the card slots, it will just move the paper out slightly...positive pressure.

just as a test, I setup my case

1200 bs-03 intake blowing on the NB and gpu
800 blowing on the cpu

1200 exhaust.

My temps
CPU 48 load
core's around 32 load
NB 38 load

I'm going to try out 2x 1200 intake and the 800 exhaust and check the temps.

Make sure you measure the temps at the same room temp, otherwise your test is useless.
