When I was going to high school in the late 80's, we loved these guys. Even though they were a little before our time we were blown away with the recording quality of their albums and the progressive nature of their music.

Are they still considered masters of rock or are they a has-been band?

These days I listen to much newer stuff, but still get intrigued with their music from time to time

Well, just graduated college....

My answer... yes.

I was just recently in a long disputed conversation with about 5 friends... we all eventually agreed that there is no one like Pink Floyd, or will ever be... these guys took it to a different dimension. I am by no means a Floyd fanatic... but I give all credit where credit is due.

hey, I'm the SmiZnit, does that make me pink floyd?

Ok, now for my true response to the thread:

I'm 20 and I think pink floyd is pretty sweet. They are one of my gf's favorite bands. (she's 20 too) I think not as many people get exposure to them anymore, but I believe they still rock.

I prefer Floyd to Zeppelin, Stones, Beatles, Kinks, The Who and quite a few others that I truly love. Bowie is second on my list, but the rest are still only the rest. When a better band with better music comes along I'll listen. Been waiting quite a while...

"the paper holds their folded faces to the floor
and everyday, the paperboy brings more"

"10 years have got behind you
noone told you when to run
you missed the starting gun"

"Long you live and high you fly
And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be"

"Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way"

"There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're sayin'.
When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can't explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb"

"So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground. What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here"

Great stuff

What about The Doors?

But I do think Pink Floyd is definitely one of the best bands of all time.

Pink Floyd rules. No matter what as long as people listen to good music pink floyd will continue to be appreciated. What they made is more than music.

Sure BoberFett, The Doors, Beach Boys, Cream, Clapton, Eno, Walsh, Ozzy... you name em. I love them all, but Floyd is still on top. Bowie is still a close second. That's quite a pile of talent to be at the top of when you think about it! :Q

Funny thing is that Floyd doesn't have the best singers or musicians, but the work is the best. It's what I want from rock anyway.

Pink Floyd is one of the greatest rock bands ever. They are still popular all over the world, on all 5 continents!!!

"still" would infer that at one point they were, which of course is untrue, so your entire question is invalidated...... ;) kidding, they are not my cup of tea, but are definately talented/popular musicians. :)

Great band, great songwriting, great lyrics, great musicianship, great concept albums! Unfortunately in the current pop music world filled with BS bands such as Limp Dick$hit and Christina Aguilera. You're only as popular as your last album and last single with a catchy chorus.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS

BoberFett: the doors changed the revolution of rock. James Douglas Morrison is and will always be a brillant poet. RIP.

they are still very much revered by many people, but what does it matter? if you like them then who gives a f*ck. i still love blue oyster cult, even though they're kind of a joke has-been band to everyone else.

Depends on who you ask. A lot of teens these days will say "Pink who?"
On the whole though, I'd say they still constitute legend.

Yes, Pink Floyd is still great, but they aren't "the shiznit", since that phrase would be used to refer to some current flash-in-the-pan singer or group that some people might like. Using "the shiznit" in the same sentence as Pink Floyd is an insult to Pink Floyd.

its always bothered me that while they're one of the best bands ever, they seem to get no public acknowledgment... err from media types that is. I can't recall ever really hearing them mentioned on MTV or VH1 or similar music type shows/channels.
